INITIATIVES

Current projects we are working on within the STEM community to spread environmentalist awareness.

Initiatives: What We Do

DASD RECYCLING PROJECT

The recycling system at the STEM Academy is of great importance. When maintenance collects recycling, they must check for any trash or non-recyclable contents in the bin. If all materials are recyclable, the waste is then put into a bigger bin that will hold all recyclable contents collected from throughout the school. However, if something unrecyclable is found in one of those recycling collections after it has been moved from its individual bin to the larger collection bin, every single material in that whole recycling bin must be thrown into the trash, causing the majority of recyclable items to lose their chance of being repurposed. The Recycling Project Committee’s primary objective is solving this recycling system through as many ways as possible. The Committee can educate students on what can and cannot be recycled, as their is much confusion as to what “trash” really is. Also, the Recycling Committee is open to as many other ideas as possible, such as creating a new bin that not only has a section for “recycling”, but one for “paper” or “aluminum” specifically. (Working with the Inside and Outside of School Awareness and Events Committee’s are advised.)

GARDENING PLAN

The Gardening Project Committee, although temporary, is a key Committee for the progression of SAS and the future projects that will be accomplished. The Gardening Project is a very complicated one at hand, as there are so many possibilities that will be ideated, argued, constructed, and maintained for years to come. All members involved in this committee must be vocal, contributive, and open-minded, as there are many members in this committee and every thought counts.  The garden’s main goal is to benefit the community, since we are planning to donate all of the produce that we grow to the Chester County Food Bank. Additionally, we want to use the garden as a way to educate the STEM community on the benefits of gardening to the environment and to themselves.

GROUP TRASH CLEAN UP

STEM SAS picks a location with an excessive amount of trash to help clean. Our club devotes a couple of hours on these days, to remove the trash from these locations. We then sort it into trash and recyclables, and weigh it. This activity represents a small way to promote environmentalism in your community.

NOVEMBER 29, 2019

Due to Marsh Creek allowing us to sort the trash on-site, we no longer weigh the amount collected. We found several tires, the remains of a house, large metal pieces and many glass bottles.
